Several methods for estimating the service life of cemented carbide CNC tools

September 05, 2022

In the processing and manufacturing, we will estimate the life of CNC Cutting Tools. It is more conducive to work when we understanding more of CNC tools. Let's take a look at what hard alloy CNC blade estimation methods.

In the theoretical discipline of machining, the relationship between tool durability (T) and linear velocity (V) is usually expressed by F.W. Taylor formula.

VTm=C1

Called T-V relationship, different workpiece materials, different tool materials, different cutting conditions have different coefficients and exponents. You can draw different tool durability relationship chart in the double curvilinear coordinate system, called T-V chart. Similarly, there are T and F (feed), AP (cut depth) relationship formula, chart.

Generally, there are the following estimation methods:

1, according to the cutting time:

In the metal cutting tool industry, CNC tool life of 15 minutes is used to recommend linear cutting speed. In actual use, generally the brand CNC tool manufacturer take recommended value of 75%, at this time the CNC tool life is about 60 minutes.

The number of machinable parts of a blade can be estimated as follows: N=(19100XVXf)/(DXh)

N: tool life, number of workpieces, unit: each; V: cutting line speed, unit: m/min; F: feed rate during processing, unit: mm/revolution; D: workpiece diameter, unit: mm; H: Processing length, mm

Example: turning a 60 mm diameter workpiece, the length of 110 mm, the tool manufacturer recommended linear speed of 200 m/min, the cutting time life of the predetermined tool T=60 minutes, the actual use of linear speed of 150 m/min, feed 0.1 mm/turn, estimating tool life:

N=(19100X150X0.1)/(60X110)=43.4

That is, according to the above conditions, each edge can process 43 workpiece

2. By cutting distance:

Cutting distance refers to the full length of the cutting distance, which is called cutting distance life, if a blade cuts continuously at a certain speed on a very large workpiece from the beginning to lose efficacy. Let's call it L.

The number of workpieces that can be machined by a blade can be estimated as follows: N=(318300XLXf)/(DXh)

N: tool life, number of machining pieces, unit: each; L: Cutting distance estimated life, unit: km; F: feed rate during processing, unit: mm/revolution; D: diameter of workpiece to be machined, unit: mm; H: Processing length, mm

Example: Turning a workpiece with a diameter of 50 mm, length of 100 mm, feed rate of 0.1 mm/revolution, cutting distance life of 10 km introduced by the tool manufacturer, estimating tool life:

N=(318300x10x0.1)/(50X100)=63.66 that is, according to the above conditions, each edge can process 63 workpiece.

3. Based on experience:

As experienced practitioners, they have rich experience to directly estimate the service life of the tool for some commonly used materials, commonly used CNC cutting tools in the processing of a particular kind of material workpiece life.

Such as diameter between ф 25~ ф 30 coating carbide drill, drilling length of ordinary carbon steel about 20~30 meters cumulative length. In general, the cumulative length of cast iron is 80~100 meters.

The above three estimation methods mentioned are only general estimates under normal circumstances. Whether it is calculated by the cutting time, or by the cutting distance, it is relatively conservative. In general, tool manufacturers do not provide these estimation methods, numerical control tool calculation methods are calculated in the designated laboratory environment, is not instructive.

However, the estimation by empirical value has considerable limitations. It does not necessarily have universal characteristics, and it can only be roughly estimated under basically the same conditions. But on a brand of a kind of cutting tool in a kind of material processing, this estimation method is closer to reality. Under the same or close conditions, it can be used as a reference.

The above are several estimation methods for the service life of CNC carbide blade, mainly measuring the environment for the laboratory, these are just an estimation of the data, or need to judge according to the actual situation.
